The Great Horned Owl, (Bubo virginianus), also known as the Tiger Owl, is a large owl native to the Americas. It is an adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. The Great Horned Owl is the heaviest extant owl in Central and South America and is the second heaviest owl in North America. It ranges in length from 17–25 in and has a wingspan of 36–60 in. The combination of the species’ bulk, prominent ear-tufts and barred plumage distinguishes it through much of the range.
This individual was one of the first animals at CPZ. It was rescued in the 80's after being hit by a car and due to its inability to fly, couldn't be released back into the wild.
