The Great Horned Owl, (Bubo virginianus), also known as the Tiger Owl, is a large owl native to the Americas. It is an adaptable bird with a vast range and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. The Great Horned Owl is the heaviest extant owl in Central and South America and is the second heaviest owl in North America. It ranges in length from 17–25 in and has a wingspan of 36–60 in. The combination of the species’ bulk, prominent ear-tufts and barred plumage distinguishes it through much of the range.

Here are a few fun facts:

  • Its call is normally a low-pitched but loud ho-ho-hoo hoo hoo but it can occasionally be reduced to four syllables instead of five. The female’s call is higher and rises in pitch at the end of the call.
  • Owls have spectacular binocular vision, allowing them to pinpoint prey and see in low light.
  • An owl’s hearing is as good as, if not better than, its vision. Owls have better depth perception[citation needed] and better perception of sound elevation (up-down direction) than human beings!
